ALDC Member Law Firm Scholarships
DOW LOHNES PLLC Scholarships.
We are particularly proud of the Dow Lohnes Diversity Scholarship and Mentor Program established in 2006 to encourage and support diversity in the legal profession. Three scholarships of $7,500 are awarded annually to rising second-year law students at The George Washington University Law School, Georgetown University Law Center, and Howard University School of Law. Recipients are selected based on personal and academic accomplishments, financial need, demonstrated leadership and commitment to serving the legal profession, the community and the public interest. A key element of the program is pairing each recipient with a Dow Lohnes attorney to mentor and provide access to training resources for the student. Georgia Scholarship Offerings
The GABWA Foundation, Inc. Georgia Association Black Women Attorneys Scholarship. Each year, the Foundation awards scholarships to Georgia law students to help defray the cost of their legal education, and in recognition of their commitment to academic excellence and service to the community. Mexican-American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF).
The increasing abandonment of affirmative action in graduate admissions and the resulting dramatic decrease in Latinos admitted to law schools illustrates the vital importance of programs like the MALDEF Law School Scholarship. We are pleased to support matriculated law students in the completion of their degrees. Through its scholarship program, MALDEF seeks to increase the number of Latinos in the legal profession. The MALDEF Law School Scholarship offers financial assistance to qualified individuals in pursuit of higher education. Each year MALDEF awards numerous law school scholarships to deserving students entering their first, second or third year of law school. Scholarships range up to $7,000 per individual. Filipino-American Lawyers of San Diego award annual scholarships to third-year law students to ease the cost of the California State Bar Exam.
National Organization Sponsored Scholarships
NAACP Agnes Jones-Jackson Scholarship Awards.
Applicant must be a current member of the NAACP and must not have reached the age of 25 by the application deadline. Applicant must be a citizen of the United States and be enrolled in an accredited college or university in the United States. Undergraduate students must be full-time with a GPA of at least 2.5 (C+). Graduate students may be full or part-time with a GPA of 3.0 (B). Applicant must demonstrate financial need. Renewal of the Agnes Jones Jackson Scholarship is competitive. Earl Warren Legal Training Program, Inc. Earl Warren Civil Rights Training Scholarships.
These scholarships are awarded each year to 15-20 new students whose community involvement activities and leadership qualities demonstrate outstanding potential for training as civil rights and public interest attorneys. These awards are limited to U.S. citizens and preference is given to students who are entering their first year of full-time study. The scholarships are in the amount of $3,000. They renewable funds are available if the student remains in good standing and fulfills all program requirements.
Scholarships by Area of Legal Practice
The Sidney B. Williams, Jr. Intellectual Property Law School Scholarship.
Sponsored by the American Intellectual Property Law Education Foundation, this scholarship addresses the need to increase the number of the minority intellectual property attorneys and to bring these attorneys to the attention of firms and corporations as candidates for employment. The $10,000 Law Scholarship will be awarded to minority students developing a career in intellectual property law or holding a past or present, full or part-time position in an area related to intellectual property law. Applicants must also have a demonstrated financial need and outstanding academic performance in the undergraduate level and law school level (if applicable). Scholarships For Out of State Use
The Fredrikson & Byron Foundation Minority Scholarship Program.
This program sponsors educational opportunities for currently enrolled, first-year law students of diverse backgrounds. The student who is awarded our 2008 scholarship is also invited to become a summer associate in 2009. Foley & Lardner Minority Scholarship.
Minority students in their first year of law school at Berkeley, Duke, Florida, Georgetown, Michigan, Northwestern, UCLA, and Wisconsin are eligible to apply for the scholarship. One scholarship in the amount of $5,000 is awarded to a student at each school. The scholarship will be paid either to the recipient or to the law school (at the recipient's choice) at the beginning of the recipient's spring semester and is to be applied to tuition, books, fees and other expenses incident to law school attendance. Foley's Minority Scholarship Program Committee will select each scholarship recipient, adhering to the standards used by Foley's Recruiting Committee in hiring summer associates. Consideration is given to significant involvement in community activities; significant involvement in minority student organizations; outstanding work or personal achievements; undergraduate records; and interest in and/or ties to a city in which Foley practices. Financial need is not a consideration. Assuming scholarship recipients have an interest in joining Foley's summer program, they will be strongly considered by the firm's Recruiting Committee. Recipients will not, however, be obligated to pursue or accept such employment. Consistent with National Association for Law Placement (NALP) guidelines, Foley will not contact, interview or make offers relating to summer employment to any first-year law students until after December of their first year.
