ALDC Mission and Programs

The Atlanta Legal Diversity Consortium, Inc. is a not-for-profit corporation whose work is funded by law firms, corporations, bar associations, and other legal industry groups in the Atlanta area. The ALDC exists to promote the recruitment, retention, development, and training of STAR Lawyers. Since 2007, under the leadership of Sam Matchett, Past President of the ALDC, The STAR Lawyer Training Program has served 192 young attorneys in 12 Professionalism training sessions in the metro area and launched its "Future STAR Lawyer Program" that has thus far provided practical instruction to 115 area pre-law students as well as awarded 7 scholarships. This year, under new President, Allegra Lawrence-Hardy, The ALDC aims to build on such successes, access how to work best with other diversity organizations, create new, non-duplicative programming, and provide an on-line educational resource for aspiring and practicing attorneys.

GUIDEPOSTS:  THE KEYS TO SUCCESS
ALDC Presenters:  Jill Harrison, Esq., and Sam Matchett, Esq.

This program was very insightful.  It is good to know what partners are thinking in certain sensitive situations.

The presentation provided exactly what I needed at this time in my legal career.  Thank you.

This training was very helpful.

I thoroughly enjoyed the STAR Lawyer Training seminar you [Sam Matchett] led with Jill Harrison today at Dow Lohnes.  I found the event interesting and informative and I appreciated your candor in responding to participant's questions.  The practical "guideposts" that you and Jill provided from a partner's perspective are certainly valuable to younger attorneys in navigating our legal careers.  In particular, your theme of "early communication" prompted me to reflect on my relationships, the partners' expectations, and my ability to provide exceptional client value.

I applaud you and the ALDC's efforts to cultivate and invest in the success of attorneys and, schedule permitting, I look forward to attending the next seminar.  Thank you again for the invitation to attend this event.

INTERPRETING DOCUMENTS:  "OH, NOW I GET IT."

ALDC Presenter:  Tom Wardell, Esq.

[This training] was very helpful as it got to the heart of what we need to master to become STAR lawyers.

Sessions that provide wisdom for practicing law are extremely important for junior lawyers.

[Tom Wardell is an] engaging and energetic speaker with helpful practical tips.

Very Helpful tips that I expect to use in my practice.

This was a very useful and practical class with instruction on how to read a document to capture understanding.

An experienced practitioner's insight is always helpful, especially for young attorneys just starting out; it's a way of mentoring and greatly appreciated.

The presentation was insightful and helpful even to us litigators.  Thank you....

The ALDC Salutes Joseph Blanco: Four Time Presenter on Interpreting Documents

Joseph Blanco, Partner, McKenna Long & Aldridge LLP

"Avoid taxing the reader by using ineffective syntax, wordiness, and needless suspense. Pay attention to the most harmless of phrases like “together with” (do you mean “and?”), or “no less than” (do you mean, “within?”). In two actual cases, confusion over the meanings of these terms became a litigator’s dream."

Keys To Success In Law School. The three most rewarding aspects of practing law are: "1. The ability to effect social and other change from a policy-maker's perspective. 2. The enhanced ability to think through and find creative solutions for complex problems. 3. The choice of being an entrepreneur or an "intrapreneur" (that is, running your own practice within a large or mid-size firm)."
